What you need to know about Invisalign

How does Invisalign work?
  • No fixed brackets
  • No painful metal
  • No visible wires

Invisalign’s clear aligners gently shift teeth into their desired position through a series of custom-made aligners over several weeks.

Each week or so, you’ll switch out your current aligners to your next set – this will be to ensure that your teeth move step by step into their correct positions.

Invisalign works in a way that puts pressure on specific teeth at the right time to move them comfortably, a continuous process that will continue until teeth have arrived at their final position.

A provider like Mint Dental will use Clincheck software to see how your teeth appear and react at different points of the treatment – this is to evaluate your progress and ensure no adjustments need to be made.

How long does Invisalign take?

Depending on the complexity of your bite or overcrowding issue, patients should expect to wear anywhere from 16 to 30 plus aligners. For example, typical Invisalign Full cases use up to 30 aligners, and more than this when using Invisalign Complex.

Treatment times can vary for Invisalign – some cases can be completed in as little as three months, whereas the treatment time for complicated cases can take up to 36 months. That said, the average Invis case is often 12 months.

Read our guide to Invisalign.

How long is the wear time for the aligners?

To achieve the results predicted by the iTero scanner at the beginning of your treatment, it’s recommended to wear your aligners up to 22 hours a day.

While the aligners are removable and can be taken out to eat and drink – it’s recommended to wear them as much as possible so that you do not interrupt the course of your treatment.

What problems can Invisalign fix?

Traditional, wired metal braces to fix common bite issues, crookedness and overcrowding are a thing of the past.

But is the treatment right for you? Are you a good candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign has the power to correct both minor and significant problems:

  • Overbite, underbite, open bite and crossbite
  • Gap teeth (extra spaces between teeth) and narrow smiles
  • Overcrowded and uneven teeth
  • Generally crooked teeth
  • Baby and permanent teeth
What Invisalign cannot fix - the limitations

There’s no denying that Invisalign is a swift, discreet and somewhat incredible system.

We love how it’s reduced the stigma for adults wishing to get braces and even for teens who might have otherwise been embarrassed to realign their smiles so obviously with bulky metal attachments and wires.

With that being said, like any cosmetic brace solution, even Invisalign has its limitations.

Even though it’s advanced since its first launch in the early 2000s, Invisalign can still not fix some common orthodontic issues:

  • If a crooked tooth needs to be rotated to be straightened, Invisalign will not be capable.
  • More to add to the list of limitations is gaps between teeth; whilst Invisalign can close smaller gaps, it doesn’t seem entirely up to the challenge of more significant gaps.
  • Invisalign is also incapable of raising (nor lowering) the position of your teeth and will be unable to move a midline discrepancy of more than 2mm.
Invisalign advantages

With Invisalign’s clear, removable aligners, we can gently move your teeth into their correct position in a comfortable, convenient, affordable, and invisible way.

The Advantages:

  • Virtually transparent – allowing patients more privacy
  • Custom-made to fit your smile
  • Patients can preview the end results before we begin
  • Removable – eating, drinking, sports and music activities not interrupted
  • Faster, fewer appointments and results you can predict and trust!
Invisalign uses better technology

iTero® Element™ is faster, more reliable and more predictable.

Dr Bonatti uses the iTero® Element™, an advanced imaging system to deliver better, longer-lasting results that you can preview and approve of before the treatment even begins. The iTero scanner allows for more accurate and precise impressions and simulates a 3D visualisation of your current smile and a visualisation of how they can look post-Invisalign.

With Dr Bonatti, you can plan your teeth straightening treatment and custom-design how you wish your smile to look before we place the order for your bespoke aligners to be created.

Our specialist orthodontist can walk you through the potential outcomes of each treatment and can even alter your treatment between different Invisalign review check-ups.

To see it is to believe it.

Am I a suitable candidate for Invisalign?

Sadly, not everyone will be a perfect candidate for Invisalign. But don’t worry. It’s not all doom and gloom.

Invisalign has become popular across social media and the internet over the last couple of years, but it’s actually been around for 20+ years.

Other, arguably better brace systems available at our practice that cost less straighten faster and offer similar discreet properties. Why don’t you ask us about them? Lingual Braces/Incognito Braces and Six-Month Smiles are just as great but not covered by mainstream media as much.

That said, if you’ve been told that you’re not suitable for precise aligner technology or similar, our orthodontist would be happy to take a look and offer you a valuable second opinion.

Here at Mint, we always recommend the best treatment for the particular occlusion or bite problem our patient might face.

If we didn’t, we wouldn’t be classed as Platinum Providers of Invisalign by now, but rather, our specialist orthodontist makes recommendations based on your condition, health and timescale.

Expect the best; feel your best!

I was looking for somewhere with a personal touch, that I could trust and that’s what I got at Mint. They always remember my name and are so polite. After a year of zoom meetings I really wanted my teeth to be straight and the results completely surpassed my expectations. I now feel comfortable taking photos! The team explained everything clearly (I felt I could ask anything multiple times) appointments were always organised and it was a really easy, worthwhile process. My teeth look like my teeth but are now at their best.
