If you’re unsure, it might be best to book a check-up first to see if we can save the tooth using other methods like placing a dental crown. A new patient check-up is £95, including your x-rays. Register.
However, tooth extraction is often recommended in circumstances, where a tooth is broken beyond repair or due to a severe infection or caries. Other obvious instances included overcrowding.
However, we often carry out tooth extractions for patients in cases where a root canal has failed, and patients still experience sharp tooth pain, or have a foul smell coming from their tooth, indicating the tooth has died.
Surgical extractions
Here at Mint Dental, our oral surgeons can provide surgical tooth removal for awkwardly positioned teeth at the back of the jaw or if they’re too badly broken apart.
Before any surgical extraction takes place, we will carry out a full dental assessment to successfully plan the removal of your tooth. In typical cases, we usually see our surgeons break the tooth in two and remove each extracted piece separately.
Tooth extraction is pain-free, with patients only feeling pressure from the dental instruments. It’s an entirely fuss-free experience with sedation.
The recovery period following a tooth extraction is relatively short and straightforward. It will take a full seven days for the gum to fully heal, but patients should feel back to normal after 24-48 hours. Any discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers.
Post-extraction instructions usually include:
- No smoking to avoid dry socket
- Consume soft foods for a few days
- Chew on the opposite side
- Avoid drinking with a straw
