The dentures of today

Today’s dentures look exactly like natural teeth. They can even be secured with dental implants, removing common problems such as slipping and clicking and giving you greater confidence when eating and speaking.

Dental implants are a popular solution for replacing single or multiple missing teeth. Alternatively we can use a bridge to fill a more significant gap left by a row of adjacent missing teeth.

FAQs

Complete dentures are a practical solution when most natural teeth are missing or removed.

Complete dentures secure themselves to the gums via suction, which patients can support using a denture adhesive. Patients can remove their full dentures at their convenience to clean and disinfect them like a partial dentures.

Sometimes, our patients opt to secure their complete dentures with a few dental implants, providing a more comfortable, stable fit and eliminating the need for an adhesive.

Partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth. This removable appliance comprises a gum-coloured plate with prosthetic teeth attached to it. Metal or tooth-coloured clasps hold the denture in position, using a few of your natural teeth as anchor points.

A partial denture fills empty spaces left behind by missing teeth and helps keep remaining teeth from shifting out of alignment. You can insert or remove a partial denture as needed — for example, to clean the appliance.

Maintaining your dentures’ cleanliness will help keep your gums and any remaining teeth healthy and your dentures free from stains.

You should remove and rinse your dentures after each meal and brush any remaining teeth. If this is not feasible, brush and rinse them at least once daily with a denture cleanser or liquid hand soap to eliminate food particles, plaque, and other debris.

If you use an adhesive to hold your dentures in place, remove any excess adhesive from your gums/teeth after removal. Continue to brush your natural teeth and your tongue. Finally, soak your dentures in a cleaning solution overnight to disinfect them.

It would help if you never cleaned your dentures with the following:

  • Whitening toothpaste — it is too abrasive
  • Any cleaning products containing bleach. Metal fixtures can tarnish, and dentures can become discoloured and weakened.
  • Hot water — can distort the shape of your dentures
  • Harsh, abrasive cleansers
  • Stiff-bristled toothbrushes

Never allow your dentures to dry out, as this can cause them to warp. When not wearing them, keep your dentures in room-temperature water.

Don’t wrap your dentures in a cloth or paper towel, as someone might mistakenly throw them away. Keep your dentures away from small children and pets who might mistake them for toys.

Always rinse your dentures before putting them in your mouth to remove residual denture solution. They are delicate, so take care when handling them.

You must continue to preserve your oral health and book regular appointments with your dentist so they can keep track of your overall oral health and the fit and condition of your dentures. If your dentures become loose or uncomfortable, schedule an appointment with our dental practice at 020 7928 4474 as soon as possible.

4 years a customer and always professional yet friendly service. Corrected my major issues (fillings/caps) and while they’re keen to ensure ongoing ‘perfect teeth’ they don’t hard sell peripheral / optional treatments. Highly recommended

I was looking for somewhere with a personal touch, that I could trust and that’s what I got at Mint. They always remember my name and are so polite. After a year of zoom meetings I really wanted my teeth to be straight and the results completely surpassed my expectations. I now feel comfortable taking photos! The team explained everything clearly (I felt I could ask anything multiple times) appointments were always organised and it was a really easy, worthwhile process. My teeth look like my teeth but are now at their best.
