What Acrylic Actually Is
Acrylic dentures are made from
PMMA, polymethyl methacrylate, a dental resin that has been the standard denture base material for decades. When people say “plastic dentures” or “pink plate”, this is what they mean.
It has held that position for a reason. It shades convincingly to match gum tissue, it is straightforward for a technician to work, it bonds well to itself, and it is comfortable against soft tissue. Newer materials beat it on individual measures. None beats it across all of them at the price.
Heat-cured and cold-cured are not the same thing
This distinction matters and almost nobody explains it.
Heat-cured acrylic is processed in a laboratory under controlled heat and pressure. It is denser, stronger, more colour-stable, and it contains less residual monomer. Every definitive denture we make uses heat-cured acrylic.
Cold-cured or self-cured acrylic sets chemically at room temperature. It is quicker and used for chairside repairs and temporary relines. It is weaker and more porous, so it stains and wears faster.
If you are ever quoted a suspiciously cheap denture, this is one of the places corners get cut. It is a fair question to ask which you are getting.
Why residual monomer occasionally matters
A very small number of people react to residual monomer, the unreacted component left in the material after processing. It presents as persistent soreness or redness on the tissue under the denture that does not settle with adjustments.
It is uncommon, and heat-curing reduces it considerably because the process is more complete. If you have reacted to a denture before, say so, because
nylon-based flexible dentures contain no monomer at all and are the usual alternative.
The Real Advantage: Acrylic Can Be Changed
This is the argument for acrylic over every other material, and it is rarely made properly.
Acrylic bonds to itself. New acrylic chemically fuses to old acrylic. That single property means your denture can be adjusted, repaired, relined and added to for as long as you own it.
Nylon and cobalt chrome cannot do this in the same way. A flexible denture that no longer fits usually needs remaking. An acrylic one gets relined.
Relines
A reline replaces the fitting surface against your gum while keeping the teeth and the rest of the denture. It is what makes a loose denture fit again.
You need one because your jaw changes shape. Once tooth roots are gone the bone underneath resorbs steadily, so a denture that fitted perfectly gradually stops touching in the right places.
Plan on a reline every two to four years. Skipping them is the most common reason a denture that should have lasted a decade is scrapped at five years, because a poorly fitting denture rocks, and rocking accelerates the bone loss underneath it.
Chairside relines are done in one appointment with a self-cure material. Quick, useful, and shorter-lived.
Laboratory relines take a few days, use heat-cured material and last far longer. For a definitive denture, the laboratory version is usually worth the wait.
Rebases
A rebase goes further. The entire acrylic base is replaced and only the teeth are reused. It suits a denture whose teeth are still good but whose base is discoloured, cracked or has been relined repeatedly.
Repairs and additions
A cracked or snapped acrylic denture can usually be repaired, often the same day. Keep every fragment, however small, and do not attempt to glue it yourself. Shop-bought adhesive contaminates the surfaces so a proper repair will not bond afterwards, which turns a repair into a remake.
If you lose another tooth, an acrylic partial can have a tooth added to the existing plate rather than being remade. That is a genuine cost advantage over the alternatives, and it is worth weighing if your remaining teeth are not certain.
Acrylic and Immediate Dentures
An immediate denture is fitted the same day your teeth are removed, so you never appear in public without teeth. Almost all of them are acrylic, and that is not a compromise.
The reason is the reline. Gums shrink substantially in the three to six months after extractions, so an immediate denture will loosen. It needs relining, sometimes more than once, as the ridge settles. Acrylic is the material that takes those relines.
Practically, that means impressions are taken before the extractions, the denture is made in advance, and it goes in on the day. You then return for relines as healing progresses, and often for a definitive denture once the ridge is stable at around six months.
Anyone planning extractions should ask about this beforehand. Once the teeth are out, the window to make an immediate denture from an accurate impression has closed.
How Long an Acrylic Denture Lasts
Reported ranges vary because they measure different things. Realistically:
- Five to ten years for a well-made heat-cured denture that is relined on schedule
- Three to five years where relines are skipped
- One to two years for a temporary or immediate denture, which is not what it was built for anyway
What ends it is rarely the acrylic failing. It is the jaw changing shape underneath until relining can no longer compensate, or the teeth wearing flat and losing chewing efficiency.
What shortens its life
- Skipping relines. The single biggest factor.
- Hot water. Boiling water or a hot tap distorts acrylic permanently. Warm at most.
- Toothpaste. Abrasive enough to scratch the surface, and scratches hold stain and bacteria.
- Letting it dry out. Acrylic warps as it dries. Store it in water overnight.
- Dropping it. Clean over a folded towel or a basin of water.
- Bleach-based products, which whiten the pink and degrade the surface.
Cleaning Acrylic Specifically
Acrylic is more porous than chrome and softer than nylon, so it needs its own routine.
Brush daily with a soft brush and either denture cleaner or plain unperfumed soap. Not toothpaste.
Soak daily in a denture solution. This reaches the microscopic porosity that brushing cannot, and it is what prevents the yellowing and odour people associate with older dentures.
Rinse after eating where you can.
Leave it out overnight in water. Your gums need the break, and continuous wear raises the risk of denture stomatitis, a fungal infection under the plate that presents as red, sore tissue.
Clean your gums and any remaining teeth separately with a soft brush. Partial denture wearers lose the clasping teeth to decay more often than they lose the denture, so those teeth need particular attention and regular
hygiene appointments.
When Acrylic Is the Right Choice
Choose acrylic if budget matters, if this is a temporary or immediate denture while you heal, if you may lose more teeth and want something that can be added to, or if you want the option to reline rather than remake.
Consider something else if visible metal clasps bother you, in which case
flexible is more discreet; if you chew heavily on back teeth, where
cobalt chrome is stronger and thinner; or if you have reacted to acrylic before.
