Implant-Supported Bridgework

One of the favourable reasons for choosing implant-supported bridges is that they offer increased strength and stability that regular bridgework simply cannot.

Are you looking to replace regular bridgework as your oral health has deteriorated? Or perhaps you’re searching for an alternative yet cost-effective way to replace missing teeth?

If that’s the case, implant-supported bridges should be on your list of treatments to explore. Here at Mint Dental Clinic in Elephant & Castle, we’re pleased to offer implant-supported bridges that offer patients a long-term but affordable solution to missing teeth.

Guide to Dental Implant Bridgework

What is a dental implant bridge?

Implant-supported bridges are often prescribed to replace multiple missing teeth in a row.

One benefit of choosing an implant-integrated system like implant-supported bridges is that they provide a solid infrastructure for long-term replacement teeth to sit. Unlike regular bridgework, there is no need to cause damage to otherwise healthy teeth by filing them down to fit a crown on top to anchor the bridge.

Dental implant bridges vs regular bridges

As implant-supported bridges are supported by dental implants and not real, natural teeth, there is no need to impact otherwise healthy teeth.

By choosing Mint Dental for this implant-based system, patients can benefit from specialists who utilise advanced digital technology to plan the implant location and angulation before surgery.

For patients, this helps them to achieve the best functional and natural-looking final result.

Dental implant bridges might be the cheaper solution

Dental implant bridges can bring down the cost of your treatment because fewer implants are placed, unlike individual tooth implant placement. The final restoration uses a bridge (a cheaper repair than implant-supported crowns), so the cost is brought down even more.

Cost should be a factor when replacing missing teeth, but it should not always conclude your decision.

Why implants are better than traditional alternatives

Dental bridges and dentures (partial or full) have traditionally been the standard go-to for teeth replacement.

And whilst they are often successful at closing gaps in the mouth, they are not always the best recommendation to promote strong oral health in the future.

For example, dentures encourage bone loss in the jaw, as it only masks the problem of missing teeth rather than solve the issue as dental implants do.

On top of this, bridgework has been known to encourage bone loss and decay of neighbouring teeth.

They also require the neighbouring teeth, which are otherwise healthy, to have crowns placed on top, which will lead to failure of these in the future.

As restorative dentists, we encourage our patients to decide based on dental advice following a consultation. However, it never hurts to have all the information on the two tooth replacement methods and how they compare against each other.

Implant supported bridges benefits

Other traditional tooth replacement methods are widely used, like dental bridges and dentures. However, as professionals, we know truthfully that they only worsen the oral condition over time and are primarily superficial repairs.

No other prosthesis or replacement solution will be as durable or provide a natural, predictable fix. So, combining implants with your missing teeth restoration, like implant-supported dentures, will improve your dentition, oral health, eating, bite, and speech functions.

The Implant Bridge Procedure

Dental implant surgery involves placing artificial tooth roots (small titanium screws) into the jawbone.

Once the implants have been placed, we must allow for a minimum period of healing called osseointegration, which typically takes three months.

The process of osseointegration cannot be rushed or skipped. It’s the essential part of the procedure that allows the bone to fuse with the dental implant. Without it, the implant would fail.

However, don’t worry; during this healing period, we will provide you with a temporary set of teeth that can be worn over the implant site while we wait for it to be strong enough to hold the bridgework.

Once the implant has healed, you’ll be invited back into the studio to uncover the implant and attach the necessary abutments (small metal posts that serve as the foundation for new teeth or restorations to be placed).

After this step, we must give the gums time to heal before the bridge is set.

One particular implant surgery, ‘Same-Day Teeth, ‘allows dentists to complete the process in one stage. Learn more.
