CBCT Scans
Here at Mint Dental Clinic, we utilise CBCT scans in implant dentistry to measure bone depth, thickness and density, which is an essential part of dental implant treatment planning.
As you might know by now, dental implants are long-lasting restorations for missing and failing teeth. However, to be placed, they need a good amount of bone to anchor to – and this is where CBCT scans enter.
Our CBCT scanners produce accurate 3D images, which our gum specialist and implant dentist, Dr Koyi, will use to precisely plan the placement of your dental implants.
CBCT scans explained
The CBCT scan will produce a collection of detailed images, like x-rays, which will show the depth of your mouth and jaw.
A critical and necessary part of the implant journey, CBCT scanners will capture different angles of the mouth and jaw and as it passes the through the body, the beams are measured to analyse and determine the density of your bone and tissue.
The computer will then process these 3D images of the jaw, which will allow us to process the results and plan your treatment accordingly.

CBCT scans are a non-invasive technique, which is completely painless for the patient. They are safe to use, but do emit more radiation than a normal x-ray and less than that of a conventional CT scan. That said, the radiation is only small and unlikely to cause any long-term harm. If you’re pregnant a CBCT scan will not be recommended.
CBCT scans are special
Normal x-rays are limited in the fact that they cannot measure bone depth, thickness and density. Only 3D CBCT scans measure all three, including the density of your bone near nerve canals and sinus cavities.
Essential in the case of dental implants, using 3D dental CBCT scans allow our dentists to see your mouth in every direction, which means we can plan the placement of your implant more accurately than ever before.
It is the fastest, and most effective way to establish if you’re a suitable candidate for dental implants as it will detail the condition of your jawbone and if any pre-implant procedures like bone grafts or sinus augmentations are required.

What happens when you have a CBCT scan?
The scanner, in the form of a large doughnut will require the patient to lay still on the chair whilst the machine rotates around your head. The scan will typically last around a minute, with the whole CBCT appointment lasting only around 10 minutes.
Patients will not need to prepare for the scan beforehand, you’ll only be asked when you arrive for your appointment at our clinic in London to remove anything that could possible interfere with the imaging process like jewellery, glasses and even dentures.
Patients who might feel a bit anxious or nervous, should speak to the dentist beforehand, who can help make extra steps to make the process as relaxing as possible for you.
