Sinus Lifts

Here at Mint Dental, we can advise on the correct pre-implant procedures if, in fact, you need them. So, book in to receive a second opinion from one of our specialists today and see what magic they can work with your smile.

Many patients who want dental implants are often told “no”, and this might be because they have an insufficient amount of bone in their jaw to hold the implant securely.

Whilst a sinus lift may feel like an unnecessary, annoying step that delays your treatment, it will be non-negotiable for some patients to ensure the implantation succeeds.

Do You Really Need One?

As local experts, our clinic in Elephant & Castle often receives an influx of missing teeth patients looking for a second opinion on their cases.

So, if you’ve been told by one practice that you need a sinus lift, and it’s worried you, or you feel like it’s not necessary, we recommend booking in for a consultation to see if there are alternative routes we can take to reconstruct your smile using implants.

The sinus is an air-filled cavity in the upper jaw. The sinus lift procedure describes the process of lifting the sinus and grafting the bone in the newly created space.

Nationally, implants have an average success rate of 90%, meaning 10% of implants fail.

And often, the main cause of implant failure is an insufficient amount of bone in the jawbone.

Sinus lifts, in this case, increase the amount of bone being placed in the upper jaw, creating additional space between molars and premolars, which can make implantation in the upper jaw more successful.

The Sinus Lift Process

Many different approaches can be used for a sinus lift procedure. However, again, this will depend on how much bone you currently have, the method of implantology and the type of bone graft.

But here are the basics that will never change:

  • Anaesthetic is used to keep surgery comfortable and pain-free
  • The dental surgeon will expose the bone by making small incisions in your gum tissue
  • A small area of the bone in the sinus cavity will be removed to raise the membrane
  • Bone grafting materials are then applied to the newly lifted area
  • Sutures are used to close the incision site

Following the surgery, the dentist may prescribe:

  • Pain medication
  • Antibiotics and antimicrobial mouthwash
  • Saline spray
  • Prescription to fight infection

Your dentist may give you:

  • Saline spray
  • A prescription
  • Pain medication
  • Antibiotics
  • Antimicrobial mouthwash

Fast Answers To The Questions Missing Teeth Patients Want To Know

  • Can you place an implant during sinus lift surgery? Sometimes, our dentists can place an implant simultaneously with a sinus augmentation. But this will entirely depend on your case and condition, all of which can be broken down after an examination.
  • Are sinus lifts painful? As with any dental surgery, some pain and discomfort can be experienced. But as an anaesthetic is used during the augmentation, patients will feel comfortable and at ease during the procedure. Often the thought of the surgery is scarier than the surgery itself. But, if you’re a nervous or anxious patient, there are extra steps to ensure you feel comfortable and happy. Some slight discomfort can be expected post-surgery, with over-the-counter medications prescribed to relieve any aches.
  • Are there any side effects following a sinus augmentation? Swelling and bleeding are common side effects, but there’s no cause for alarm, as any swelling will likely relieve itself over the coming days.

Cases Where A Sinus Lift Is Required

In certain scenarios, a sinus lift is non-negotiable. Conventional dental implants cannot be placed without an adequate, strong amount of bone. However, only an expert dentist will be able to determine whether you need one or not.

Situations that may require a sinus augmentation occur when missing teeth have been left ignored and untreated.

In these cases, the bone no longer receives the stimulation it needs, which causes the bone to resorb. And as bone depletion begins within just six months of losing a tooth, it is thought that without advanced and recommended tooth replacement solutions like implants, 25% of the jawbone is lost within 12 months of tooth loss.

As time passes, the bone continues deteriorating and cannot be restored without pre-implant procedures like bone grafts or sinus lifts.

How Can You Possibly Avoid A Sinus Lift?

Our past patients at Mint Dental will tell you how we go the extra mile to make the patient happy.

Our dentists always take the time to inform patients about their conditions and all the options available to them, so they can be the ones to make an informed decision based on our honest dental recommendations.

For example, you might have been told you need a sinus lift, but were you aware of other implant-based treatments designed specifically for patients experiencing severe bone loss? All-on-4 dental implants, for example, are hailed as the ultimate graft less solution to replacing a full arch of missing teeth.

Look at the table below that looks at each implant-based system and details the level of bone support needed.

4 years a customer and always professional yet friendly service. Corrected my major issues (fillings/caps) and while they're keen to ensure ongoing 'perfect teeth' they don't hard sell peripheral / optional treatments. Highly recommended

I was looking for somewhere with a personal touch, that I could trust and that’s what I got at Mint. They always remember my name and are so polite. After a year of zoom meetings I really wanted my teeth to be straight and the results completely surpassed my expectations. I now feel comfortable taking photos! The team explained everything clearly (I felt I could ask anything multiple times) appointments were always organised and it was a really easy, worthwhile process. My teeth look like my teeth but are now at their best.
