As experienced restorative dentists, we recommend that you shouldn’t ignore a broken crown as it puts your oral health at risk.
There are three approaches we can take to fix broken crowns.
In certain situations, depending on the size of the fracture, we can repair the crown with composite bonding, which is relatively cheap. In scenarios where the crown has come loose, we can simply re-cement it. However, if the crown is damaged beyond repair, you’ll require a new one.
Don’t try to manage your broken crown at home. Restore it safely with us.
Crowns are used to protect the underlying tooth structure from decay and infection. It also saves patients from losing their teeth and is used to restore the smile.
Restoring your broken crown is recommended to keep the underlying tooth protected from intruding bacteria, infection, further deterioration and decay. It will be essential for restoring strength and a natural-looking smile.
Chipped and broken crowns can sometimes be repaired if the chip isn’t large. Here, we’ll use a resin, which is a composite material that’s the same colour as the tooth.
In other cases, if the crown has become frayed or jagged, we can reshape and smooth it.
A broken crown can be glued or re-cemented back on. In this case, keep the fallen off crown safe and we’ll give it a clean and re-position it safely. It’s recommended that you do not try to glue the crown back on yourself.
If you require a new crown, you’ll need to wait a few days whilst your new one has been made after we take impressions. Placing the crown itself can take between 30 minutes to two hours, depending if any preparation is required beforehand.
Dental crown repairs on the other hand, are even faster, taking less than an hour to fix with dental bonding.
