What You’ll Need to Do Before Receiving Invisalign
As Platinum Elite Providers of Invisalign, we’re here to educate our patients on preparing for their Invisalign treatment – not just the facts of what to expect during treatment but how you’ll need to manage your oral health beforehand. This way, when they receive your aligners, you’ll feel confident and be ready to begin.
You’ll need to schedule a check-up.
Before undergoing Invisalign treatment, your Invisalign® Doctor will typically request and recommend that you undergo a dental check-up. This is to ensure that your teeth and gums are in great condition and to avoid any unnecessary risks.
Dental check-ups are necessary before treatment because our dentists can assess the health of your gums and teeth, looking for signs of inflammation, bleeding, recession, and dental decay. At the same time, our dentists can assess your tooth alignment and bite, identifying particular malocclusions, misalignments, and bite problems. This provides us with accurate information on which type of Invisalign will be best suited to realign your smile.
Your check-up appointment can usually be integrated into your Invisalign consultation. This will ensure your teeth and gums are in tip-top condition and take all of the necessary scans to plan your journey to a straighter, healthier smile.
Undergoing professional Airflow hygiene treatment is recommended
In addition to a dental check-up, our dentists will likely recommend that you have a hygiene appointment before your treatment begins to ensure your teeth and gums are clean.
For example, if there’s a build-up of tartar or plaque, this must be addressed before treatment to ensure conditions like gum disease do not arise or thrive when you wear your aligners for 22 hours per day.
However, dentists don’t recommend any type of hygiene session, but one that includes Airflow. This is the only way to safely and sufficiently clean around crooked teeth and sub-gingivally to get rid of plaque lurking below the gum line. Plus, it will remove surface stains simultaneously.
Strong oral hygiene habits are also required during treatment. Whenever you put your aligners back into your mouth, you should ensure your mouth is completely clean. Patients are recommended to keep backup toothbrushes and toothpaste on them at all times to prevent situations where they cannot adequately clean their teeth after every meal. Sugar-free gum is also recommended.
Complete any other dental restorations first
If it’s been a while since your last check-up and you’re concerned that you might have a cavity or require a dental filling, clean or crown, then you must get this sorted before beginning your Invisalign journey. For example, getting fillings done and restoring your teeth is important because if we took your impressions today and then later down the line, you need a crown or a filling, then your tooth’s shape will change, and we’ll need to rescan your teeth to ensure an accurate fit.

Gum disease will need to be under control
If you have gum disease, you can still qualify for Invisalign. However, this issue must be under control before you begin your orthodontic treatment, especially in the case of removable aligners, which might aggravate or even intensify the underlying problem. This is why a hygiene appointment is recommended before you begin, as well as frequent deep cleaning appointments during your treatment so your teeth remain safe from invading bacteria.
Invisalign daily check-list
At the same time as preparing for your treatment, there are a few essential facts to remember daily when you start wearing your aligners. For example, did you know you’ll have to clean your teeth after each time you eat? Use the information below as a guide to how best to manage wearing Invisalign daily, and save the photo to your phone so you can easily remember how to take care of your teeth and aligners during your treatment.
