Inlays are much like fillings because they can seal a large cavity within the centre of a tooth. In cases where one or both of the corners — or “cusps” — of the tooth have worn away, an onlay can restore the entire chewing surface.
Inlay or onlay prostheses can repair moderately decayed or damaged back teeth and are suitable for teeth that are too damaged for a filling but not yet damaged enough to require a crown.
Fillings vs Inlays & Onlays
Dentists can use an inlay or onlay to sustain more of the tooth’s natural structure.
When compared to traditional fillings, inlays and onlays:
- They are stronger and prevent the teeth from further breakdown
- Allow for better contact with adjacent teeth to reduce food trapping
- Allow for better aesthetics

What happens during an Inlay and Onlay fitting?
A fitting for an inlay or onlay usually requires two appointments. During the first session, your dentist will prepare the tooth for the inlay or onlay.
Your dentist will then take a digital 3D impression, using the revolutionary iTero® intraoral scanner, of the remaining tooth structure and send it to a dental laboratory.
This allows for a more accurate fit of the onlay. A technician will use the scan to produce your inlay or onlay. You will be given a temporary filling for protection and comfort.
At the next appointment, the dentist will remove the temporary filling and test the Inlay or Onlay to ensure it fits appropriately before cementing it.
Unless you choose gold, the most hard-wearing of the available materials, your new inlay or onlay will blend in with the rest of the tooth for a seamless appearance.
Inlays & Onlays FAQs
Also known as “indirect” restorations, a lab technician custom-makes your inlay or onlay, and your dentist bonds it to the tooth.
Conventional fillings, known as “direct” restorations, are materials applied directly to the affected tooth after decay removal.
If you have a medium to a large cavity, moderate to severe breakage, or an old filling that no longer offers adequate protection, talk with your dentist at Mint Dental Clinic to find out if an inlay or onlay is suitable.
Although the structure must be reshaped, only decayed areas must be removed, and the fractured areas must be smoothed. Our dentists take every precaution to preserve the natural tooth.
Once your anaesthesia has worn off and the cement is set, you can chew with the treated tooth. Our dentists will advise you on which foods are off-limits.
Inlays and onlays are solid and long-lasting. Conscientious daily brushing, interdental cleaning, professional cleanings and dental exams are all you need to ensure your restoration lasts for many years.
