Swollen Gums
Gums that are so sensitive that they disrupt your day-to-day, making it difficult to eat or manage your oral hygiene, require immediate attention from an emergency dentist.
You need an urgent dental appointment if:
- You have very sore, swollen gums.
- Your teeth are becoming loose or falling out.
- Ulcers or red patches in your mouth.
- Injury to your soft tissues in the gums or cheek.
Gum disease can quickly become a dental emergency if the swelling is extreme and visible around your teeth or if the swelling is localised to a bump in a particular area.
Treatments we would typically prescribe:
- Most infections or swelling can be managed with a course of antibiotics.
- A deep dental clean might be recommended to scale and remove bacteria causing the swelling.
- Osseous surgery might be applicable to reduce the pockets around your teeth or laser gum surgery to clean under the gum line thoroughly.
- If hypersalivation is a cause of increasing bacteria in the mouth, we can make lifestyle changes and advice on certain medications to reduce saliva production.

When gums are sore and tender, gum disease is often the easiest culprit to blame. But without visiting us, we’ll be unable to detect if other serious issues are the cause.
For example, soft tissue damage could be another likely candidate causing the pain in your gums, or it could be an infection like an abscess, which, if left untreated, can have serious consequences.
Your emergency appointment fee covers:
- 3D imaging software allows us to see what’s really going on.
- Appointments are faster and diagnoses are more accurate.
- Treatment is completed on the day for an additional cost.
- Prescriptions and X-rays included
- Patients can be seen within 2 hours of their call.

Dental tip: While you’re waiting for your appointment, improve your comfort by applying a cold compress to the outside of your mouth or cheek. Avoid rubbing anything on your gums, even if you’re desperate for relief as they can irritate the situation more and burn your gum tissue.
