Does insurance cover the cost of dental implants?

July 6 2023

  1. Do you have missing teeth but don’t have savings to pay for them?
  2. Don’t want to explore 0% dental finance options?
  3. Have health insurance already and are wondering if you’re covered?

If the above sounds right, keep reading to discover if insurance for dental implants even exists…

Dental insurance – what’s covered and what’s not

Basic plans

✅ Dental check-ups, exams and preventive dentistry

✅ Portion of the cost for dental treatments (e.g. £800 for £32 pm)

✅ Accident cover, emergencies and dental injuries

✅ Restorative care, including crowns, bridges and dentures (Denplan)

✅ Routine x-rays

❌ Cosmetic treatments

❌ Orthodontic treatments

❌ Surgical implants

❌ Any treatment not deemed to be clinically necessary (AXA)

The fine print

Some insurance companies like Bupa offer up to a 20% discount on dental treatments like bridges or dentures.

However, Bupa also states that treatments provided by a specialist dentist registered with the GDC or a dentist with a special interest who only provides this service are not eligible for discounts. So it can be difficult to know where you stand.

denplan insurance cover

Finding insurance that covers dental implants

Although most healthcare plans don’t cover the cost of implants, certain dental saving plans can make the process more affordable.

Certain providers and plans won’t cover dental implants as they are not deemed clinically necessary, but certain packages and upgrades can help spread the cost.

Things are changing – add-ons and upgrades

  • AXA Premium: 50% towards the cost of private treatment, which can be claimed after three months of membership. AXA will pay a maximum of £500 per patient a year towards the cost of implants.
  • Denplan Supplementary Insurance: If you’re a member of Denplan and have Supplementary Insurance, patients can apply for Denplan Implant Upgrade Cover. Patients can be covered up to a maximum of £20,000 per incident and £2,100 per implant fixture (following an injury only).
