If the tissue at the centre of your tooth becomes inflamed and infected, you may require root canal treatment to remove the infection before it can spread. At Mint Dental, we are fortunate to Dr. Pratik Shah who has a Special Interest in Endodontics, allowing us to provide you with high quality root canal therapy.

The root canals are small channels at the base of a tooth that contains nerves, connective tissues, and blood vessels, collectively known as dental pulp.

If a tooth becomes cracked or decayed, bacteria can penetrate the surface of the tooth and infect the pulp. We carry out root canal treatment to save the tooth and prevent the infection from spreading to the gums or neighbouring teeth.

Do I need root canal treatment?

Dental pulp infection symptoms to watch out for include:

  • Throbbing, persistent pain along one side of your jaw
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
  • Swelling in your jaw or cheek
  • Headaches, earache, and neck pains

It is critical you undergo root canal treatment as soon as you become aware of an infection. The longer you leave your infected tooth, the higher the probability of the infection spreading to other parts of the mouth.

What can I expect during the procedure?

Your dentist will begin by x-raying your infected tooth and the surrounding area so they can assess the severity of the infection, allowing them to plan your treatment accordingly.

During the procedure, your dentist will numb the area. They will place a rubber dam around the tooth, isolating it and keeping it clean and dry. Your dentist will make an opening in the crown of your tooth to access the pulp chamber, before applying antibacterial fluid to the area.

Following this step, the dentist will remove the pulp using rotary files before cleaning, shaping, filling, and sealing the canal. Finally, they will restore your tooth with a filling or a dental crown.

What is rotary file technology?

At Mint Dental Clinic we use NiTi rotary files made of nickel-titanium because the  super elasticity of the material easily allows for the cleaning and shaping of extremely curved root canal spaces within a tooth. They also enable us to carry out the treatment quickly, which means less time in the surgery for our patients.

How will I feel after treatment?

After root canal treatment, the symptoms of your infection should quickly subside. The relief will be especially evident if you have been experiencing a severe toothache.

Patients can manage any tenderness or sensitivity with over-the-counter painkillers.
