Re-Root Canal Treatment

A re-root canal treatment is required when a prior root canal does not heal or continually becomes infected.

A re-root canal involves removing and cleaning the previous root canal filling and reapplying the treatment a second time.

At Mint Dental, we are fortunate to Dr Pratik Shah, who has a Special Interest in Endodontics, allowing us to provide you with high-quality root canal treatment.

Why might I need a re-root canal?

You might need to have your root canal redone for several reasons. Sometimes, the initial treatment does not heal properly. Other causes include:

  • New damage or decay exposes the root canal filling
  • The crown protecting the tooth cracks or becomes loose
  • The previously treated tooth has broken
  • The first root canal was not completed to a sufficient standard to prevent contamination in the tooth
  • The shape of the root canal is more complicated but was not detected during the initial endodontic assessment
  • Crown fitting was delayed following the previous treatment

What are signs there might be a problem with my existing root canal?

Some common symptoms of a complex root canal that may require a re-root canal treatment include:

  • Pain when biting down
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • A blister or bump inside your mouth

What can I expect when having a re-root canal treatment?

Before the procedure, your dentist will carefully examine your tooth to determine why your first root canal might have failed. This assessment will enable the dentist to create a treatment plan for your re-root canal treatment.

Your dentist will follow the same procedure as before.

Sometimes, if the root canal is very narrow or blocked, you may require a minor surgical procedure. The surgery involves making a small cut in the gum under a local anaesthetic. The dentist will then remove any diseased tissue and the root’s tip before sealing the root canal’s end and closing the incision.

Why is a re-root canal a good treatment option?

Effective root canal treatment is essential for preserving an infected tooth and avoiding an extraction.

At Mint Dental Clinic, we have a particular interest in Endodontics on our team, which uses cutting-edge technology, knowledge and experience to ensure your comfort and a successful outcome.

To do this, he uses microscope technology that provides magnification and fibre optic illumination during treatment.

The microscope lets our endodontist view tiny details within your tooth for more precise treatment. He also uses rotary files for even more accuracy, so you spend less time in the dental chair.
