Getting Dental Implants Via The NHS, Costs & Alternatives

If you have missing teeth, you’ll know that dental implants are the gold standard choice, often reflected in their price. With several long-lasting benefits, it’s no surprise that many missing teeth patients in the UK are keen to explore the possibility of receiving dental implants and, of course, turn to our NHS for help.

But, only in rare circumstances can dental implants be obtained on the NHS. So, if you’re hoping the National Health Service will cover the cost of your missing teeth treatment, don’t get too excited. The NHS only fund advanced procedures for patients in specific circumstances.

What the NHS will offer

The NHS does not typically provide dental implants for everyday cases. You’ll likely be offered dental bridges or dentures if you don’t fit certain criteria.

Patients wanting dental implants who have lost their teeth to decay, gum disease or sporting injury will typically need to have their teeth replaced at a private clinic and pay the full price.

The cost of dental implants

Compare the cost of dental implants privately to alternative missing teeth treatments provided by the NHS.

However, there are exceptions

nhs logoDental implants are sometimes available on the NHS. The NHS will fund dental implant treatment in particular cases and high-priority groups, which include:

  • Patients who have surgery to treat head and neck cancer.
  • Patients who have congenitally missing teeth.
  • Patients who have conditions causing missing teeth.
  • Patients who have suffered severe traumatic events leading to tooth loss.
  • Patients missing teeth in one or both jaws have had unsuccessful denture treatment.

For example, the NHS are funding dental implant treatment through Guy’s Hospital, for those suffering from the above criteria.

However, even if you have lost your teeth under the above conditions, a consultation is necessary first, and guidelines state that all conventional, alternative tooth replacement options must be explored first.

Without showing a severe medical need for dental implants, getting you approved for the treatment will not be enough. You will have to pay for implants privately.

There’s a catch

If approved for funding, NHS England only provides dental implants that are valid and guaranteed for 5 years. After this time, if you need replacement implants, crowns, or dentures, you must seek care from your local private dentist, paying full price for repairs or replacements.

Exceptions and rules

The NHS will not accept you for implant treatment if you experience poor dental health, have a blood or bone disorder, suffer from bruxism or have poorly managed diabetes. Dental implants are not completely free via the NHS either. Some patients will have to pay fees of £280 in England, £200 in Wales, and £380 in Scotland.

How else can you fund dental implant treatment?

Going private for your dental implant treatment might be more costly. Still, it might be worth it compared to conventional treatments like bridges and dentures, which do nothing to support the underlying bone or discourage future tooth loss.

Dental finance is one way to make your dental implant treatment more affordable. By opting for 0% finance over 12 months or longer interest-bearing terms up to 60 months, you can split the cost of your treatment from as low as £68.60 per month for one implant.

4 years a customer and always professional yet friendly service. Corrected my major issues (fillings/caps) and while they're keen to ensure ongoing 'perfect teeth' they don't hard sell peripheral / optional treatments. Highly recommended

I was looking for somewhere with a personal touch, that I could trust and that’s what I got at Mint. They always remember my name and are so polite. After a year of zoom meetings I really wanted my teeth to be straight and the results completely surpassed my expectations. I now feel comfortable taking photos! The team explained everything clearly (I felt I could ask anything multiple times) appointments were always organised and it was a really easy, worthwhile process. My teeth look like my teeth but are now at their best.
